Truong has long been fascinated by the octopus, which she has depicted in previous works. A mother octopus starves herself when her offspring are born, refusing to eat for a month before passing away. This sacrifice reminds the artist of the fierce love demonstrated by her own mother and other mothers in her extended family, all refugees. The hands throughout the work offer synchronized reverence to this creature as a deity symbolizing maternal dedication.
