trăng non: Opening reception and publication launch
Join us for the opening reception of trăng non by Trần Văn Thảo, as well as the launch of his much anticipated self-titled monograph, on Friday, November 14, from 6-8 PM.
A member of the historic Group of 10, Trần Văn Thảo (b. 1961, Saigon) is recognized as one of the pioneers of abstract art in Vietnam. Influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, he plays with rich colour fields, primitivist markings, and the materiality of the canvas surface, exploring with various mediums and techniques such as collage and papier mâcher. As much inspired by the surrounding landscapes as the experience of daily life, Trần Văn Thảo’s paintings convey a sense of harmony and balance through a contemplative atmosphere.
Highlighting a selection of works from the 1990s to the recent years, Trần Văn Thảo, the first monograph of the artist, offers an in-depth examination of the art of one of Vietnam’s foremost abstract painters.
With contributions by Pamela N. Corey, art historian and professor of modern and contemporary art history; Archie Pizzini, architect, artist, photographer and teacher; Đỗ Hoàng Tường, artist, and Anh Đào Hà , current assistant curator at Galerie Quynh.
This monograph is published on the occasion of trăng non by Trần Văn Thảo, on view November 15 through December 27, 2025, at Galerie Quynh, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
