The expansive artistic practice of Hà Mạnh Thắng (b.1980, Thai Nguyen province) has evolved from studies of Vietnam's cultural and social history to meditative observations of existence and explorations of the polysemic nature of landscape. His recent artworks, incorporating abstract paintings and antique-inspired objects, reflect his continuous exploration of Vietnamese heritage and culture, along with his commitment to the themes of eternity and timelessness.
This publication accompanies the artist’s solo presentation Kìa Non Non Nước Nước Mây Mây, organised by Galerie Quynh at the former Temple Club — a colonial-style residence located at 29 – 31 Tôn Thất Thiệp, that used to be Sri Thendayuthapani Temple’s guest house. The exhibition features 16 experimental works in the Đối Ảnh series that illustrate Hà Mạnh Thắng’s continued fascination with materiality, time, and the excavation of history and cultural heritage.
Including essays by Dr. Nora A. Taylor, art historian and professor of South and Southeast Asian Art at School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Tim Doling, historian and writer; Trần Lê Quốc Bình, architect; and Brian Doan, artist.
This catalogue is published after the exhibition Hà Mạnh Thắng : Kìa Non Non Nước Nước Mây Mây presented from December 20, 2022, to February 4, 2023, by Galerie Quynh at 29 – 31 Tôn Thất Thiệp, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
