Lien references both her name, Honglien, and her mother's name, Lienhoa, both meaning lotus flower. The work reimagines the lotus as a hybrid being—animal transforming into plant, poised to be carried by the wind. Lotus leaves appear in the upper right, while the hybrid creature combines elements of rooster and fish (an homage to water). Within this mutable form, a mother tenderly touches the head of her firstborn child.
