Le Thua Tien

Overview
Le Thua Tien was born in Hue in 1964, where he continues to live and work. Trained in the arts of drawing, oil, silk and lacquer at the College of Fine Arts, Tien’s relationship to art and the memory he feels inherent to its materiality, continue to nurture his exploration of light and shadow. For Tien, art possesses a redemptive space for the human spirit. It is thus a practice of the excavation of self, an emptying of material attachments, an opportunity to confront the beliefs that condition the spaces we inhabit and the images we assume of ourselves.

After graduating from the College of Fine Arts at Hue University in 1988, Le pursued a Master’s degree at the Royal Arts Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, at which point his artistic practice changed direction, from figuration to one informed by abstraction. The years spent in the Netherlands in the mid-late 1990s saw Le holding his first solo exhibition (Monumentalite’ intime at Gallery Amber, Leiden, the Netherlands), taking part in a number of residencies and winning scholarships and awards. Le has since held numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world.
