Vy Trịnh’s solo exhibition ON DA DREAM, curated by Thái Hà, is currently featured in Artforum’s Critics’ Picks by Duong Manh Hung.
ON DA DREAM is a play on words that links the hopefulness of dreaming with the buoyant sensation of riding a motorcycle, particularly the Honda Dream – a popular Japanese brand that first emerged in 1980s Vietnam during Đổi Mới, a period of crucial socioeconomic reform, but is still found secondhand today. Positioning this vehicle not only as a quotidian household item but also as a symbol of industrialization, capitalist free-market economics, and accessible mobility, Trịnh’s sculptural language short-circuits the Honda Dream’s conventionality by repurposing its foraged parts and melding these to create phantasmagorical structures – their hybrid forms perched between alien ductility and familiar ornamentation.” – Duong Manh Hung
